I do so enjoy this post. Horse & Human . . . oh, me . . . and writing . . . I started writing about the life of a thoroughbred about sixteen years ago. His name is Kauai King, and he won the 1966 Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, at the Belmont he came in fourth with a torn tendon. His life, to me, is a great story. Born at Sagamore Farm, in Glyndon, Maryland, great pedigree, went back there after his retirement in 1966. Short few years later, sent to England for stud purposes, then onto Hokkaido, Japan where he lived out his life at stud. Died on my birthday, Jan. 24, 1989. In my research I met some wonderful people, gained valuable info on the thoroughbred.
If you would ever have the time and would like to know more about this grand horse, I would be happy to talk with you about him. I was there! I have loved Kauai King forever!
I live not far from Sagamore, it's a gorgeous farm (though no longer a working horse farm, sadly). If you come to visit you might be able to stop by and see the place, or at the very least drive through (there's a road that runs through the center of the farm). There's a lot of horse history up here and it's beautiful.
This was very enjoyable and I loved listening to your voice!!
Thanks Kimry! I really appreciate you listening!
Great commentary and insight on an increasingly complex subject.
Well, at least from a horsey perspective!
